Simu Liu in Shang-Chi: A Major Success?


When it comes to superheroes, we all have our favorites. We know that these heroes come in different shapes and sizes. However, considering the ethnicity of these heroes, the majority of these portrays a white hero.

So, to know that an Asian hero movie is slated for release has received much hype. However, the public’s reaction has been both positive as well as negative. It’s been such a long wait for Asian based hero movie. So maybe that’s why the mixed reviews. 

Who is Shang-Chi?

The Shang-Chi movie is based on the character Shang-Chi, who is a Kung Fu master. ‘Shang-Chi’ in Chinese means the ‘Rising Spirit.’ The character first debuted in Special Marvel Edition in 1973. The hero was created by Jim Starlin, creator of Thanos and Steve Englehart. With Simu Liu taking on the role of Shang-Chi, opposite Hong Kong’s legend Tony Leung and Awkwafina, the movie is to be released in 2021.  

Marvel’s Shang-Chi was modeled after the legendary Bruce Lee. Shang-Chi is a martial arts hero within the Marvel realm. He has the capability to duplicate himself. But his real power lies in the total prowess of all martial arts. Shang-Chi is considered as the top hand-to-hand combatant in the Marvel Universe.Shang-Chi is the son of Dr. Fu Manchu, a Marvel villain. He was raised to follow in his father’s footstep. But after the revelation of his father’s evil nature, he disowns his own father.

With around 170 million views on the Chinese microblogging floor Weibo, the Shang-Chi movie is fast trending with quite an anticipation from the viewers. The movie project so to say has been given the much-needed boost with the success of the summer hit ‘Crazy Rich Asians.’

By the age of 30, this man has made a name for himself in the world of movies. Born in a Chinese family, who then migrated to Canada, Simu Liu’s rise to stardom has been one a fast and sparkly one. 

Simu Liu, before his start in the movie world, worked as an accountant originally. He got his break in the acting world working as an extra in the 2012’s ‘Pacific Rim.’

Following his stint in the ‘Pacific Rim,’ he soon started to nail roles in movies like ‘Nikita’ and ‘Beauty and the Beast. This was followed by his casting in ‘Taken,’ an NBC series. After his role in ‘Taken,’ he landed the lead role in ‘Kim’s Convenience,’ as Jung Kim. The show has been running since 2016. Liu was also worked in the comedy series ‘Fresh Off the Boat.’

The reasons why Simu Liu is a success as Shang-Chi

Though his career is just a few years old, the actor shows versatility and finesse in his execution. The reasons as to why he is a success can be attributed to many reasons. Some of the reasons highlighted are:

  •  Simu Liu and the prestigious accolades

Simu Liu for his role in the drama Blood and Water series earned him the Canadian Screen nomination for acting in 2017 and the ACTRA. Plus, his role in the show Kim Convenience has also received rave reviews. Liu’s talent of balancing comedy along with drama in theConvenience show has earned him numerous accolades from the viewers as well as the critics. His acting talent has also gained him international recognition and thus, the role of Shang-Chi.

  • He is skilled in many spheres besides acting

Liu is not just meant to be in front of the camera. He also has the talent to be the one behind the camera and direct. Moreover, he also has good vocals, where he has sung songs for the Convenience show. 

Beyond the show business world, he is an athlete and a sports enthusiast. Another bonus for Marvel- he knows Kung Fu and Karate. So, how’s that for a cool Marvel hero?

  • Liu knows how to do comedy too

From his work in the Convenience show, it’s clear that Liu can definitely pack a punch in the world of comedy. Plus, his guest appearance in the comedy hit ‘Fresh off the boat’ also validates his talent. His works show that Liu can be funny not in just one but through many facets. So, you see Marvel roped in not just a hero, who can do intense and serious action-packed drama. But a hero who can do all that but also has a funny streak.

Liu’s experience in a stunt team gives him that extra edge for his casting as Shang-Chi. Though his career as an actor is fresh, he has enough experience under his belt to be the action hero in the Marvel Universe. Working as a stunt double gives him the advantage of being flexible to work with. 

Therefore, for all the many factors laid down, Liu fits the bill to be Shang-Chi and will be a successful one.
